Who we are

Raawiy is a free app for listening to lectures from Islamic scholars in Nigeria. It is a project of Ar-Raawiy Institute, which decides what is collected and why and is the data controller responsible for the information described in this policy.

You can reach us at admin@raawiy.com.ng or on 07061543553.

What we collect

Account details

You can browse and listen as a guest without an account. If you create one, we store your email address or phone number, your password in hashed form, your display name, your preferred language and, if you choose to give it, your city. We never store your password in a form we can read.

Your listening and activity

When you use the app we record:

  • which lectures you play, how far you got, and whether you finished
  • bookmarks you save, including the timestamp and any note you attach
  • scholars you follow
  • lectures you download for offline listening
  • your listening streak and total listening time
  • a session identifier used to group activity from one sitting

This is what lets you resume a lecture where you left off, keep your place across devices, and see your streak.

Searches

We store the text of searches you run, the language, how many results came back, and which result you opened. We use this to fix searches that return nothing useful.

Device and technical information

If you allow notifications, we store a push notification token for your device so we can tell you when a scholar you follow goes live. Our servers keep standard logs that include your IP address and app version for security and troubleshooting.

How we use your microphone

Raawiy asks for microphone access for two separate reasons. Both are optional and neither happens in the background or without your action.

Voice search

When you tap the microphone in the search bar, your speech is converted to text by the speech recognition built into your phone: Google on Android, Apple on iOS. That processing is done by your device's provider under their own privacy policy. The audio itself is never sent to Raawiy's servers. We only receive the words that come back, and we store them as a search query as described above.

Speaking in a live session

During a live session you may ask to speak. If the host approves you, your microphone audio is streamed to our servers and broadcast to everyone listening to that session. This only happens after you request it and the host accepts.

Live sessions are recorded by default, and the recording may be published to the Raawiy library afterwards. If you speak during a session, your voice can form part of that saved recording. If you do not want your voice recorded, do not request to speak. You can ask us to remove a recording that contains your voice using the contact details below.

Why we use your data

  • to play lectures and keep your place, bookmarks and downloads in sync
  • to show you scholars, topics and series relevant to what you already listen to
  • to notify you when a scholar you follow goes live or publishes something new
  • to run live sessions, including carrying your voice if you are approved to speak
  • to understand in aggregate which lectures are useful, so we know what to add next
  • to keep the service secure and to investigate abuse

We rely on your consent for notifications and microphone access, and on our legitimate interest in running and improving the service for the rest. You can withdraw consent at any time in your device settings.

Who we share it with

We do not sell your personal data, and we do not share it for advertising.

We use a small number of service providers who process data on our behalf:

  • Our technology providers, who build and maintain the app and its servers on our instructions
  • Google Firebase Cloud Messaging, to deliver push notifications
  • Cloudflare R2, to store and deliver audio, images and documents
  • Our streaming server, to carry live audio to listeners
  • Google and Apple speech recognition, for voice search, as described above
  • Our email provider, to send password resets and service messages

We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or where it is necessary to protect the rights and safety of our users.

How long we keep it

  • Account details are kept until you ask us to delete your account.
  • Listening history, bookmarks and searches are kept until you delete your account.
  • Aggregate statistics, for example how many people listened to a lecture on a given day, are kept indefinitely. These carry no information that identifies you.
  • Published recordings of live sessions are kept as part of the library, in the same way as any other lecture.

Deleting your account and data

You can ask us to delete your account and the data attached to it at any time. Email admin@raawiy.com.ng from the address or phone number on the account, with the subject Delete my Raawiy account. We will confirm and complete the deletion within 30 days.

When you delete your account we remove:

  • your email address, phone number, password, display name and city
  • your listening history, progress, bookmarks, follows and downloads
  • your searches
  • your push notification token

Two things survive deletion, and you should know about them:

  • aggregate counts that no longer identify you, for example a lecture's total number of listens
  • recordings of live sessions you spoke in, which are published library content. Ask us separately if you want your contribution removed from one, and we will take it down.

Your rights

Under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 you have the right to ask us for a copy of the data we hold about you, to have it corrected, to have it deleted, to object to how we use it, and to withdraw consent you have given. Email us and we will respond within 30 days.

If you are not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission.

How we protect your data

Passwords are stored hashed, never in readable form. Traffic between the app and our servers is encrypted in transit. Access to the admin portal is limited to named staff accounts with roles that restrict what each person can see. No system is perfectly secure, but we treat the trust you place in us seriously.

Children

Raawiy is a general audience app for seeking knowledge and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13. If you believe a child has given us personal data, contact us and we will remove it.

Changes to this policy

If we change what we collect or how we use it, we will update this page and change the effective date at the top. Significant changes will be announced in the app.
